Minister of Solidarity, Social Integration and Family, Naima Ben Yahya, highlighted on Wednesday in Cairo, Morocco’s efforts in reinforcing gender equality.

Speaking at the 22nd Ordinary Meeting of the Executive Council of the Arab Women’s Organization (AWO), Ben Yahia stated that the Kingdom is pursuing its tireless efforts to reinforce gender equality and accelerate the empowerment of women and girls, under the enlightened leadership of King Mohammed VI, stressing that the Sovereign prioritizes the issues of Moroccan women and the guarantee of their rights.

The King has constantly stressed the importance of strengthening the role of women, as well as their inclusion in the process of sustainable development and their involvement in decision-making, the Minister recalled, adding that the royal project for social protection will have a positive impact on women, who are the most vulnerable category in societies throughout the world.

In line with royal guidelines, Morocco gathered great experience, particularly concerning the participation of women in decision-making and political life, she said, adding that the Kingdom has worked to integrate gender concepts into policies and programs, while adopting a gender-responsive budget, for over 20 years.

Morocco has also put in place strategies and public policies in support of equality between women and men, the Minister added, highlighting the development of the legislative framework through the first generation, marked by the adoption of the Family Code and the Labor Code, and the second generation, marked by the law on combating violence against women, the law on combating human trafficking and the texts relating to the protection of domestic workers.

Morocco has recently launched the revision of the Family Code, as well as several other laws, such as those relating to criminal procedure and the penal code, she added, underlining the adoption of numerous laws relating to the generalization of social protection.

The Minister noted that Morocco has continued to interact positively with international and regional mechanisms and conventions relating to the consolidation of women’s rights, whether by withdrawing reservations or acceding to conventions and annexed protocols.

She cited the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, noting that the Kingdom respects all its international commitments.
