Spanish authorities have arrested Óscar Sánchez Gil, the head of the anti-money laundering division of the Madrid police, and his partner, a fellow police officer, on suspicion of involvement with a drug trafficking organization recently dismantled by law enforcement.
The couple was detained after agents from Spain’s Internal Affairs division discovered €20 million hidden behind a wall at Sánchez Gil’s home in Alcalá de Henares, a town near Madrid. An additional €1 million was found in his office at the Madrid police headquarters. Sánchez Gil’s partner, who works at the Alcalá de Henares police station, was also arrested during the operation.
Both individuals were presented before the National Court, where they were formally placed in detention.
Investigators believe the couple may be connected to a drug trafficking network linked to the largest cocaine seizure in Spain’s history, which led to recent arrests in Algeciras, Alicante, and Madrid. According to Voz Pópuli, later confirmed by EL MUNDO, Sánchez Gil had hidden €20 million in illicit funds in his home and about €1 million in €50 notes in his police office.
The arrests are part of an ongoing investigation into corruption within Spain’s law enforcement agencies. Authorities have not ruled out further arrests as they continue to probe the couple’s potential involvement in criminal activities.
