Spain’s two largest trade unions, CCOO and UGT, agreed Monday to call a 24-hour general strike this autumn over housing costs and wages, though the action still requires formal ratification by their governing bodies.
The unions said the strike would demand wages high enough for workers to afford housing, alongside stronger measures to curb rents and expand permanently protected public housing.
No date has been set. CCOO and UGT said they would coordinate the timing with tenant groups and other social organizations, while UGT leader Pepe Álvarez said the strike would not take place during Spain’s election campaign.
The decision follows nationwide housing protests and Parliament’s rejection Friday of government housing decrees.
The Madrid Tenants’ Union welcomed the announcement, having previously called for organized labor to join a national mobilization over soaring housing costs.
