Morocco’s participation in the 2024 Paris Olympics has been deemed “positive” by Minister of National Education, Pre-Primary Education and Sports, Chakib Benmoussa, despite not meeting all expectations.
The nation secured a gold medal in the 3000-meter steeplechase, thanks to athlete Soufiane El Bakkali, and a bronze medal in the men’s under-23 football tournament.
Benmoussa highlighted the significance of the bronze medal in football, as it marked Morocco’s first-ever Olympic medal in the sport and the first for any Arab national team at the Olympic Games. The country’s overall performance placed it 60th globally, 9th in Africa, and 5th in the Arab world.
Morocco’s Paralympic team achieved even greater success, securing 15 medals: 3 gold, 6 silver, and 6 bronze. This impressive showing propelled the country to 31st place globally.
Benmoussa acknowledged Morocco’s long-standing commitment to international sporting events, including the Olympics, the World Cup, and track and field competitions.
He emphasized that these events serve as a source of pride and unity for the Moroccan people, especially during the moments when their athletes achieve victory.
Despite the overall positive performance, Benmoussa admitted that the results fell short of the public’s high expectations, particularly following the Moroccan national football team’s impressive run in the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
He acknowledged the raised bar for Moroccan sports ambitions in the international arena.
