Hassan II University in Casablanca has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Moroccan university to be listed in the Shanghai Ranking’s Top 1000 Universities for 2024.
Placing in the 901-1000 range, Hassan II University’s inclusion marks Morocco’s debut in the global higher education elite. It is currently the only Moroccan institution featured in this year’s ranking.
In the Arab world, Saudi Arabia led with 12 universities making the list. King Saud University made significant progress, ranking 90th, followed by King Abdulaziz University and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology at 201st.
Egypt had eight universities in the ranking, with Cairo University at 301st and Ain Shams University at 601st.
Jordan’s representation in the ranking is limited to the University of Jordan, while Lebanon had two institutions: Lebanese American University at 501st and American University of Beirut at 801st.
Qatar’s sole entry was Qatar University, which secured the 501st spot.
The United Arab Emirates had three universities featured: Khalifa University at 601st, University of Sharjah at 701st, and United Arab Emirates University at 801st.
In the Maghreb region, Tunisia joined Morocco in the ranking, with the University of Tunis El Manar also positioned at 901st.
On the African continent, in addition to Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt, Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa University ranked 601st. Ghana’s University of Ghana also made the list at 901st. South Africa led the continent with eight universities, including the University of Cape Town at 201st.
Globally, the United States continued to dominate, with Harvard University at the top, followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
