Indian hacker group claims to target Morocco in cyberattack campaign

A newly formed Indian hacker group, dubbed “The Night Hunters,” has declared its intention to launch a cyberattack campaign against Moroccan institutions, according to a security analysis report issued by DATAPROTECT’s Cyber Threat Intelligence team.

The operation, codenamed “OP_MA,” was set to begin on August 10th.

While the group has previously focused its attacks on Indian entities, including a high-profile breach on the Ministry of Tourism and Economic Creativity in June, it is now expanding its horizons to target Morocco.

The group’s primary tactic involves Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, designed to overwhelm target systems and render online services inaccessible.

The motives behind the group’s choice of Morocco remain unclear. In light of this imminent threat, Moroccan authorities and citizens are urged to exercise heightened vigilance.

The public is advised to be wary of suspicious emails, links, or attachments, as these could be part of phishing campaigns.

Additionally, institutions are encouraged to review and update their cybersecurity protocols to mitigate the risk of a successful attack.

Experts recommend that Moroccan organizations invest in DDoS mitigation services, enhance network monitoring, and implement load balancing technologies.

Moreover, having a comprehensive incident response plan in place is crucial for effectively managing any potential cyberattack.

Morocco has become a prime target for cybercriminals, ranking among the top ten African countries facing severe cyber threats.

Reports previously placed Morocco in the unenviable third position on the continent, trailing only Ethiopia and Mauritius, with Nigeria close behind. Globally, the Kingdom stands at the 15th position in terms of cyberattacks.

The report highlights the pervasive threat of Remote Access Trojans (RATs) in Morocco, particularly the NJRat malware, which has an 8% prevalence rate.

These malicious software programs grant hackers remote control over infected computers, enabling them to steal data, install ransomware, or spy on users.
