Morocco emerged among the top 10 African countries facing severe cyber threats, especially through the use of Remote Access Trojan (RAT), a malware used to gain remote control of a target computer, according to Africa Business Insider.

The same source reported the recent findings for October 2023 shared by Check Point® Software Technologies, highlighting that Morocco holds the 3rd spot on the African level, lagging behind Ethiopia, Mauritius, and Nigeria.

On the global level, the Kingdom comes at the 15th position being targeted and attacked.

In Morocco, NJRat poses a significant cybersecurity threat, with an 8% prevalence This threat is primarily driven by a mal-spam campaign that employs malicious email attachments.

In contrast, the NJRat rate is relatively lower in South Africa, hovering just above 2%.

NJRat is capable of capturing keystrokes, accessing unauthorized cameras, stealing credentials from browsers, uploading as well as downloading files, and surveilling desktops.

The same source mentioned that RATs mostly targeted both the education sector and government agencies across the Middle East and Africa.

Recent official data for the year 2023 indicates the Kingdom faced an increase in electronic and cyber-attacks, as reported by Abdellatif Loudiyi, the Minister Delegate in Charge of National Defense Management.

“The General Directorate of Information Systems Security worked, through the interventions of the Alertness, Monitoring, and Cyber Defense Center, on providing cybersecurity requirements and managing cyber security incidents and threats,” assured Loudiyi.

The Minister Delegate added that the General Directorate issued this year 464 security bulletins and memos, including 133 critical bulletins, as mentioned in the report.

In 2023, 150 cyber incidents were processed, as highlighted in the report without providing specific details about targeted institutions or the nature of attacks.

The Directorate organized training sessions, such as meetings, seminars, and workshops, led by national and international experts, to address challenges related to cyber security threats and the secure use of digital space.

The aim of these sessions was to enhance the skills and capabilities of specialized human resources in the field of cyber security.
