In a strategic move to affirm its position on the international stage, the Kingdom of Morocco has taken a further step towards consolidating its military power.

In this context, the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) signed a major contract for the acquisition of 200 Cobra 2 armored vehicles, manufactured by the Turkish industrial giant Otokar. This pact, worth 136 million dollars, symbolizes not only a reinforcement of the Moroccan arsenal, but also a profound military-industrial cooperation between Rabat and Ankara.

At least, that’s what the Africa Intelligence website understands from its recent reports. The order, proudly disclosed by Otokar on social platforms in mid-December, is not limited to the supply of vehicles.

It also includes a training and logistics dimension, encompassing the delivery of spare parts, maintenance equipment and a technical training program designed to hone the forces’ skills in handling these war machines. Deliveries, scheduled to start at the end of this year, will take place over a period of one year, divided into several batches for gradual integration into the FAR.

Since leaving the factory in 1997, the Cobra has proved its worth to the Turkish army, rapidly establishing itself as a versatile tool for military strategists. Its multiple configurations – troop transport, reconnaissance, command, even armored ambulance – give it invaluable adaptability in a variety of theaters of operation.

The Cobra 2 version promises even greater effectiveness, with its tough V-shaped hull capable of defying light weapons and resisting assaults from anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, as well as improvised explosive devices – all omnipresent threats in today’s conflict zones.

This is not the first time that Morocco has turned to Turkey to modernize its military fleet; Turkey’s field-proven Bayraktar UAVs are eloquent testimony to this. Renewed confidence in Turkish expertise is a clear indicator of Morocco’s desire to maintain and expand a technological and defensive alliance with its NATO partner.

Some 20 of these vehicles are destined to equip Moroccan peacekeepers, reflecting the Kingdom’s commitment to UN-led peacekeeping missions. In these operations, where mobility and safety are paramount, the Cobra 2s will provide enhanced protection for soldiers deployed in often unpredictable and dangerous environments.

The Cobra 2s, with their cutting-edge technology and robustness in the face of the most formidable threats, are therefore destined to become a pillar in the realization of Morocco’s global security policy and in the protection of Moroccan soldiers, enabling them to carry out their noble mission as peacekeepers with honor.
