During its eleventh meeting in Rabat on Monday, the Committee for Heritage in the Islamic World of the World Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) authorized the incorporation of eight components of intangible heritage under Morocco’s name.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, the elements include pearl jewelry, the Hayek and burnous of Figuig, the tannery, the equestrian art of Mata, the pottery of Safi and Attalbi, the songs and the Aouad dance of Ait Baâmrane, and the traditional game of Ssig.
Morocco, which has 54 elements of intangible heritage recorded on the ISESCO list, now ranks first among Islamic countries in this category, according to the same source.
The Heritage Committee in the Islamic World also elected a new office for a four-year term, with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia taking the presidency, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan taking the vice-presidency, and the Republic of Senegal serving as rapporteur.
Earlier this month, following the approval of the request for the inscription of Malhoun on the representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO, the kingdom introduced 13 elements of its heritage into this list, maintaining itself at the head of African countries, said the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication in a press release.
