The Office National des Pêches (ONP) reported that landings of coastal and artisanal fishing products at the port of Lamhiriz fell by 54% during the first eight months of the current year to 1,888 tons (T), compared with 4,110 T for the same period in 2022.
In its latest report on Moroccan coastal and artisanal fishing statistics, the ONP states that the market value of these catches rose by 5% to MAD 57.37 million, compared with MAD 54.44 million for the same period a year earlier.
By species group, the same source reports a 13% increase in landings of pelagic fish at the port of Lamhiriz, to 123 T, representing a value of around MAD 1.06 million (+158%).
However, the report shows a tangible increase of 40% to 751 T (MAD 9.68 million/+178%) in white fish catches for the first eight months of 2023 at this port infrastructure.
Cephalopod landings fell by 70% to 989 tonnes (MAD 44.34 million/+2%).
The report also highlights an 80% drop to 25 tons (MAD 2.27 million/-67%) in shellfish catches between January and August of the current year at the Lamhiriz port infrastructure.
On a national scale, landings of marketed products from coastal and artisanal fishing reached 753,996 T at the end of August 2023, down 16% on the same period a year earlier.
In terms of value, landings rose by 7% to more than MAD 7.02 billion.
