Blood transfusion centers throughout the Kingdom were exceptionally mobilized, in a show of solidarity with the victims of the Al Haouz earthquake. Blood stocks in the Casablanca-Settat region reached record levels, just a few days after the launch of the blood donation campaign.

Shortly after the devastating earthquake that killed more than 2,900 people and injured at least 5,000, thousands of Moroccans rallied to the call of blood transfusion centers across the Kingdom. Their aim was to bolster national blood reserves and provide vital aid to the victims of this natural disaster, which has affected many regions of the country.

Moroccan and foreign citizens gathered in the early hours of last Saturday, forming long queues in front of the blood donation centers. A powerful scene testifying to popular solidarity and unity.

The director of the regional blood transfusion center for the Casablanca-Settat region, Dr. Amal Drid, announced that blood reserves are currently experiencing an “unprecedented” surplus. Indeed, Casablanca residents have continued to donate blood consecutively for three days. She confirmed that the center now has 9,000 whole blood bags, and that 60% of donors were first-time participants in the donation process.

In addition, Dr. Drid pointed out that the collection achieved last Saturday and Sunday alone equals, if not exceeds, what is usually collected over a three-month period. She added, in a statement to Hespress, that this was “an unprecedented record recorded in just two days in this region, often described as the lungs of the country”.

She also pointed out that the centers are now operating on an appointment-only policy for donors, but said they will be operating in the coming days accepting up to 400 donors a day, while offering appointments to other available donors.

“This is what we’ve been looking for all year to achieve self-sufficiency, in line with the recommendations of the World Health Organization, in order to ensure a sufficient blood supply for a seven-day period”. continued the center director, noting that the centers are currently working to prepare blood for storage under the required conditions.

She urged citizens to continue donating blood in the coming months, noting that the injured will certainly need blood over the next few months. It is a vital material capable of saving many lives.
