Morocco’s hydrogen output might surpass Spain’s by more than 30% by 2050, up to a total of 160 terawatts, according to a study commissioned by the European Commission and published on August 25 by Spanish media.
The study predicted that “the locally produced 160 terawatts of hydrogen can provide 5% of the needs of the European continent.”
Morocco is working to establish itself as a major exporter of hydrogen and a significant supplier to Europe, given that Moroccan investments in the hydrogen industry have grown to over 16 million euros.
Morocco “could emerge as a competitor to Spain in their ambition to lead the export of hydrogen to Europe,” according to the report.
A study by Deloitte found that “Morocco could fully offset the deficits in the trade balance through the income from green hydrogen exports.”
Morocco has made significant investments in the hydrogen industry by attracting foreign capital.
The report gave the example of the French company TotalEnergies, which announced a 9.4 billion euro investment in a hydrogen and ammonia exporting project in Morocco .
A similar project is OCP’s 7,000 million euro investment to build an ammonia factory in June 2023 that will process phosphates.
“France and Germany are on the path of cooperation with Morocco to ensure imports in this field, whether through the establishment of infrastructure in this country, or by agreeing to transport hydrogen through the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline, ” said the study.
Moroccan hydrogen “appears to the Europeans in all scenarios as an important source.”
The Spanish article concluded that “the presence of production sources close to European consumption areas is always healthy economically.”
