Renewable energies covered 16.1% of Morocco’s demand for electric power in 2022, according to the annual report issued by the National Office of Electricity and Drinkable Water (ONEE).
In the last year, Morocco produced 41,420 GWh of electric energy; 10,156 gigawatt hours are produced by the stations of the National Office of Electricity and Drinkable Water, and the rest is produced by private companies.
Thanks to its installed production capacity of about 2056 megawatts, Moroccan Energy company became one of the largest private producers of electricity in Morocco, meeting 38% of the national electricity demand
Morocco’s electrical capacity produces 11,005 MW at the end of 2022, marking an increase of 0.79% every year.
The proportion of renewable energies amounts to 2,384 MW or 21 per cent of the total.
Morocco has projects that produce 1153 megawatts of electric energy from renewable wind sources and about 831 megawatts from solar sources.
The percentage of electrical renewable energies remains far from achieving Morocco’s goal of reaching a share of 52% by 2030, which requires more investments funded by the private sector.
According to official data published by the ONEE, coal accounts for 37 per cent of the electrical capacity, while hydraulic stations have a capacity of 1,306 megawatts.
During the past year, the rural electrification rate reached 99.86 per cent, compared to 99.83 per cent in 2021, after the rate was around 45 per cent in 2000.
Rural electrification covered about 41,448 villages after 178 new villages were electrified in the past year.
While the office’s total number of clients reached 6.9 million at the end of 2022, 2.1 million families benefited from the measure.
