The Federal Senate of Brazil has voted in favour of supporting the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara. The motion was signed by 28 Brazilian Senators from various political affiliations.

The motion expressed its  “support for the Kingdom of Morocco in its efforts to find a consensual, peaceful and lasting political solution to the Sahara regional conflict, thanks to the efforts made in this respect by this country”.

The motion stressed the strong ties between Brazil and Morocco and the climate of trust between the two countries. The senators agreed that this was the right time to consider Morocco’s autonomy proposal as a realistic foundation for a political resolution in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.

This endorsement is expected to “open up a very ambitious prospect for the two countries to continue building a multifaceted and mutually beneficial strategic partnership,” stated the motion.

The fortification of this relationship has significant opportunities for collaboration in multiple domains, particularly ,food safety. Brazil and Morocco have already introduced a legal framework covering multiple sectors such as defence, scientific research and digital transitions, among others.

This multifaceted strategic cooperation comes in the context of Brazil’s and Morocco’s mutual trust and respect. “This partnership is based on the values of tolerance and openness that the two countries share, as well as on their common vision of the opportunities and challenges of the contemporary world,” the motion added.

The motion was put forward during a plenary session by senator Hiran Manuel Gonçalves da Silva, of the Progressive Party.

It is worth noting that right after the adoption of this motion, the Polisario announced the creation of a parliamentary friendship group called “Brazil-Western Sahara.” This group is chaired by the left-wing deputy Erika Kokay, Polisario lobbyist in Brazil, known for being a defender of Polisario’s positions.
