A highschool in Sidi Suleiman, near Rabat has been grappling with lack of electricity for over a year, with official authorities showing no response to the dire situation.
The the school administration of the Mahmoud Darwish Preparatory High School, affiliated with the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of National Education has told Hespress that the reasons behind the power outages are far from reasonable. Despite diligently paying their electricity bills, the school has been without power since June 2022.
Initially, when the high school administration tried to contact the local branch of the National Electricity Office in Sidi Yahya al-Gharb, they were provided with an astonishing excuse for the ongoing power outage. The agency claimed that the secondary school, along with neighboring areas, had unpaid dues from previous months.
However, the Mahmoud Darwish Preparatory Secondary School administration firmly asserts that all outstanding payments have been settled. They further revealed that the National Electricity Office evaded communication and intentionally created numerous obstacles.
It was only after filing an official complaint that the agency responded, resulting in a temporary electrical connection but the electricity has been plagued by slow performance and frequent interruptions, ultimately ceasing completely in March of this year.
The situation prompted the school administration to correspond with the Regional Academy of Education and Training in the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra region, seeking assistance.
Promises of a swift resolution were made, but the academy failed to fulfill any of its commitments. Silence prevailed after months of unfulfilled promises.
The challenges faced by this educational institution extend beyond power outages.
Water supply has also been severely impacted since the school relies on a small-sized electric generator, acquired with funds from one of its members, to generate electricity.
Consequently, essential services have come to a complete halt, and the teaching process has regressed to primitive means. Shockingly, the school’s dedicated teachers, numbering more than twenty, are unable to utilize any digital resources due to the ongoing power outage.
The repercussions for the students have been nothing short of disastrous. Their lives have been turned into an arduous ordeal, as the majority cannot engage in effective home study or access digital services during classes, severely hindering their educational progress.
The administration of Mahmoud Darwish Preparatory High School now urgently implores the official authorities to intervene and restore the electricity supply, considering it a fundamental right.
With exams rapidly approaching, their very occurrence is now under threat due to the persistent power outages.
