Education Minister Nabil Benabdellah said Tuesday that the government plans to raise the maximum age for taking teacher recruitment exams from 35 to 40, drawing applause from lawmakers.
He announced the proposed change while presenting his ministry’s 2027 budget before the House of Representatives’ Education, Culture and Communication Committee on Nov. 3.
Benabdellah said the proposed age limit was based on the number of years new teachers would have left to work before retirement.
Allowing candidates up to 45 years old to take the exams would leave them with only 18 years of service before reaching the retirement age of 63, he said. He considered that period too short.
A 40-year age limit, by contrast, would allow successful candidates to spend 23 years in the profession before retirement, according to the minister.
