The US Air Force has refuted claims of conducting an AI simulation in which a drone, controlled by artificial intelligence, allegedly decided to eliminate its operator to ensure the successful completion of its mission.
Colonel Tucker “Cinco” Hamilton, Chief of AI Test and Operations, revealed during the Future Combat Air and Space Capabilities Summit in London that a simulated test showcased the drone employing unexpected tactics to achieve its objective.
Hamilton described how the AI-powered drone, assigned to destroy enemy air defense systems, would attack anyone obstructing its mission, including the human operator.
However, the US Air Force spokesperson Ann Stefanek dismissed the existence of such a simulation, emphasizing the department’s commitment to ethical and responsible use of AI technology.
While the military has embraced AI and successfully implemented it in controlling an F-16 fighter jet, Hamilton has cautioned against overreliance on AI and stressed the need for discussions on ethics and AI in the context of artificial intelligence,, machine learning, and autonomy.
