France’s top protocol chief and Former Consul General of France in Marrakech Philippe Casenave was fired this week, over the alleged “misuse of France’s Marrakech state property.”
Three French diplomats told Politico that from 2017 to 2021, Casenave would have lent his official residence to an interior designer “friend,” who received “prostitutes” there.
Internal documents obtained by POLITICO show that the facts of this scandal were first revealed by France’s foreign affairs ministry in 2021, after it launched an investigation into the matter that same year.
The internal investigation into this wrongdoing stated that the consul’s friend received “young people, presumably prostitutes” on a regular basis, in the absence of the consul.
“All of this revealed a clear ethical lapse, an abuse that very probably tarnished the reputation of the general consul in Marrakesh,” adds the report, quoted in Politico.
The French state-owned 785-square-meter riad has served as the location of multiple parties the designer hosted, who reportedly used silverware and dinner service with the insignia of the French Republic during his “unofficial“ celebrations.
Only a few days after his appointment to the prestigious protocol chief position, the diplomat had to give up the position following the revelations.
French authorities have also opened an investigation into the matter.
The case is making a lot of noise in the world of French diplomacy, a it raises questions about the Republic’s faulty background check systems.
