Moroccans spent at least 3 million euros in 2021 on visa applications to enter various European countries, which were ultimately rejected, according to the “Visa Schengen” website dedicated to news developments of Schengen visas.

Although Morocco is the fifth most country worldwide to obtain Schengen visas, after the Russian Federation, Turkey, Ukraine, and Saudi Arabia, it has the highest refusal rate among these countries.

Schengen representatives in Morocco rejected a total of 157,100 Moroccan requests for visas to the region in 2021, accounting for 27.6% of the total applications submitted, whereas the refusal rate for the first four countries was 3.2%, 16.9%, 2.7%, and 4.3%, respectively.

The statistics from the same source indicate that France is the country in the Schengen region that most rejects Moroccan visa applications.

In 2021, out of 58,310 applications submitted, France rejected 20,369, equivalent to 35%. Spain had the second-highest number of rejected applications. Of the 84,499 Schengen visa applications submitted to the Iberian country, 15,137 were rejected, or 18%.

Besart Bajrami, founder of the “SchengenVisaInfo” website, said that Moroccans spent at least 3 million euros on visas they did not obtain, taking into account that the cost of applying for a unified and non-refundable Schengen visa is 80 euros.

However, this amount may be doubled when considering the additional expenses that Moroccans have to pay to prepare their application file and the required documents, which are mostly taken care of by third parties.
