Spain’s 2026 minimum wage increase has raised the amount non EU tourists may be asked to prove at the border, pushing the minimum funds threshold for short stays to €1,098.90 under an older entry rule.

The change, a technical adjustment to Spain’s proof of funds rule, links the amount foreign visitors must be able to show to the country’s minimum wage, now at €1,221 per month under a royal decree published in February.

Under Spain’s entry rules, third country nationals may be asked to prove sufficient means for their stay, calculated by day but subject to a minimum floor Spanish authorities say proof can include cash, credit cards, certified checks or other accepted financial documents.

The Interior Ministry’s current guidance lists the 2026 requirement at €121.10 per person per day, with a minimum of €1,098.90 regardless of trip length.

Border checks remain discretionary, but travelers unable to prove funds, accommodation or return travel can be refused entry.

A person visiting Spain for four days may still be asked to show access to nearly €1,100, rather than only the daily amount multiplied by four.

The rule applies to third country nationals entering Spain under short stay conditions, including Moroccan travelers with Schengen visas, British citizens after Brexit and other non EU visitors.
