Spain’s Rafael Nadal is expected to miss 6 to 8 weeks due to an injury he sustained at the Australian Open on Wednesday.

British news agency “PA Media” reported that the Spanish legend’s time in the Australian Open champion ended early in the second round of the tournament, after losing to American Mackenzie McDonald.

Nadal stopped abruptly at the end of the second set and grabbed his left thigh, though the player chose to finish the match after undergoing medical treatment off the field, but his movements on the field were very difficult.

The 36-year-old underwent an x-ray in Melbourne on Thursday morning which showed a grade two iliac muscle tear.

Nadal’s team stated that he will return to Spain for a period of rest, knowing that the normal recovery time for the injury ranges between 6 to 8 weeks.

If the time frame proves correct, Nadal could also miss the Indian Wells tournament which starts in March but should be fit for the clay court season, which is the player’s preference.
