Bank Al-Maghrib and the Ministry of Economy said that 25.3% holders of non-performing small loans stopped making payments at the end of 2021.

These loans amounted to about MAD 843 million, representing a risk rate of 10.3%, up compared to 8.3% recorded in 2020, added the same source.

In detail, 11 institutions are active in the micro-credit sector in Morocco, providing about MAD 9 billion to their customers in 2021, compared to MAD 8.6 billion in 2020, an increase of 5 %, further stated the same source.

The average loan obtained by customers within the framework of small advances is about MAD 1 million last year, compared to MAD 9,000 in 2020.

Four associations for small loans account for 97% of this market, which directs its financing mainly to micro-enterprises, followed by the loan directed to social housing.

Cities acquired 68% of total loans in 2021, compared to 70% a year ago, added the same source.

About 837,000 customers benefited from microcredit services, an increase of 3.3% compared to 2020, 47% of whom were women, further specified the same source.

The legal system regulating the small credit sector has undergone several amendments, the latest of which was in 2018 by raising the financing ceiling to MAD 15 million in order to support the financing for small businesses, according to the same source.
