Despite an unprecedented financial crisis, the Lebanese parliament convened on Thursday to pick a new president with no agreement on Michel Aoun’s replacement.
Deep disagreements among MPs have increased concerns that Lebanon, after Aoun’s term expires at the end of October, could be without a president for several months, further eroding the confidence of creditors.
The incumbent’s own election in 2016 followed a 29-month period of no one in the oval office during which time lawmakers made 45 unsuccessful efforts to agree on a nominee.
