The value of the agricultural sector and food industry exports at the end of July exceeded MAD 50 billion, up compared to MAD 40 billion for the same period last year.

According to the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the positive performance is due to the rise in food industry exports, which grew by 27.8%, to reach MAD 25.4 billion.

The data, part of the situational note for the month of September, indicate that the volume of citrus exports from September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022 amounted to 766,000 tons.

This constitutes an approximate 40% increase on an annual basis. The same data indicated that the national production of citrus during the same period amounted to about 2.7 million tons, accounting for a 14% increase.

With regard to vegetables, exports amounted to nearly 1.6 million tons, with an estimated growth of 13%. Tomatoes topped the export list with about 670,000 tons. Red fruits exports recorded more than 125,000 tons, with a growth of 18%.

Olive oil exports also recorded a good performance, with the annual volume nearly doubling so far this September.

The volume reached 13,200 tons in the first eight months of the year, with a MAD 456 million value. While the national production of olives reached about two million tons, it noted an increase of about 21% compared to the previous season.

This positive performance is achieved despite the ongoing difficult weather conditions hindering the agricultural season.

A deficit in rainfall and an uneven distribution of rain across Morocco has affected the national production of cereals, which is expected to reach 34 million kantars, a decrease of 67% compared to the previous season, which recorded nearly 103.2 million kantars.

The Ministry of Agriculture is working to strengthen the integration of the agricultural sector into the food industry.

The agricultural projects of Lokos in Larache were launched on an area of about 150 hectares, with an investment of nearly MAD 457 million.

Morocco is also considered one of the top 5 best destinations of agri-food investment in Africa according to a recent report from food industry specialist Agv Wonder, the British International Investment Fund and the Dutch Development Bank.
