Britain’s Conservative Party chose Liz Truss, former Foreign Secretary, to become the next Prime Minister succeeding the resigned Boris Johnson after a two-month contest.
Liz Truss won the most votes from members of the Conservative Party on Monday, triggering the beginning of a handover from Boris Johnson and becoming the third female Prime Minister in the UK after Margaret Thatcher et Theresa May.
Before being named Conservative leader, she was foreign secretary. Truss has also been trade secretary, chief secretary to the Treasury, women and equalities minister, and environment secretary. She was the first woman to be Lord Chancellor and justice secretary, according to the Insider.
She will replace Boris Johnson, who was forced to step down as the Conservative party leader and as a Prime Minister on July 7, after a string of scandals demonstrated his lax approach to standards in public life and lack of direction. It has come with a mass resignation of about 60 officials.
Liz Truss, received 81,326 votes (57%) against 60,399 for her rival (43%), according to the results communicated by Graham Brady, responsible for the organization of the poll.
Truss has promised to act quickly to handle Britain’s cost-of-living crisis, “I will present a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy,” she added after her victory was announced.
“I will address the energy crisis by taking care of people’s energy bills, but also by taking care of the long-term energy supply challenges,” she added, promising a “big win” for her party in the legislative elections scheduled in 2024.
