Boris Johnson resigns as Conservative Party leader
Thursday 7 July 2022 - 13:08

Boris Johnson announces he is stepping down as Conservative Party leader and will remain prime minister until a new Conservative leader is appointed.

“It is now clear that the Conservative Party wants a new leader and therefore a new Prime Minister,” Johnson acknowledged at the start of his speech.

The process of succession to the leadership of the Tory party must begin now, the Prime Minister added, noting that a more precise timetable would be announced next week.

The Prime Minister’s resignation comes after a slew of resignations this week from his cabinet, in protest at his handling of sexual assault allegations against a senior government member.
