The Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima regional council, the Municipality of Tangier, and the Agency for the Promotion and Development of the North have approved a MAD 63 million budget to finance the rehabilitation of the former wholesale market for fruit and vegetables in Tangier.
The facility will be transformed into a regional exhibition and arts space, under the supervision of the region’s Wilaya.
This cultural project aims to create a local socio-cultural dynamic, and support the social, architectural, and cultural development of the city of Tangier, according to a joint statement issued upon the signing.
The agreement aims to improve the quality of infrastructure for hosting major events, give new impetus to artistic and cultural development and establish a space for the exhibition and promotion of local products of the region’s prefectures and provinces.
In addition, this project of conversion and rehabilitation of the former wholesale market, which covers an area of over 2 hectares, will house, among other things, a space dedicated to performing arts workshops, a platform for guidance, a circus, an exhibition space, a conference room, and several administrative and service dependencies.
A committee chaired by the Wali of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, consisting of the parties to the project, will be established to ensure good governance of the execution of the project and its monitoring, knowing that the completion of this site is estimated at 3 years from the date of approval of the agreement.
