Morocco increased its electricity purchase from Spain last month by 133%, compared to the same period last year, according to the Spanish newspaper Okdiario.
Spanish electricity exports to Morocco amounted to 23,500 megawatt-hours in May, obtaining a positive balance with the difference between exports and imports exceeding 58,200 megawatt-hours, added the same source.
“The interruption in the Algerian gas flow to Morocco, through the Maghreb-European gas pipeline did not affect the production of electricity in the Kingdom,” further stated the Spanish media.
Morocco was able to meet its needs for this vital resource by accessing new markets, said the same source.
Spain is reportedly supplying Morocco with record amounts of energy through the submarine pipeline of the Strait of Gibraltar.
According to official figures compiled by Red Eléctrica (REE), Spain’s main electricity operator, similar amounts of energy flow from the Iberian country to Morocco were last recorded back in 2020.
Electricity consumption rises annually in Morocco, given that the demand for that energy doubles every 10 years, said the Energy Ministry.
The individual consumption of energy has increased 2.5 times in the last 20 years, added the Ministry.
This increase is the fruit of strengthening diplomatic ties between the two countries, as Spain stood behind Morocco’s autonomy plan on Western Sahara.
Besides Morocco, both France and Portugal have also raised electricity purchases from Spain to record levels, given the shortage of the resource on the global market.
