Olympic Champion Soufiane El Bakkali became a world champion, after he finished first in the men’s 3,000 steeplechases final Monday night at the World Athletics Championships, crossing the line in 8 minutes, 25.13 seconds.
The newly crowned world champion beat out Lamecha Girma of Ethiopia, who finished behind him at 8:26.01 for the silver, while Kenya’s Conseslus Kipruto came in third at 8:27.92.
El Bakkali ended Kenya’s reign in the event, as this marks the first time since 2005 that a Kenyan did not finish top of the podium, and the first time a Moroccan wins the event.
