The closure of the Ceuta and Melilla borders has gained Morocco’s customs four billion dirhams, as the full effects of the ban on smuggling between the two enclaves and Morocco begin to take effect.
In its 2021 report, The Administration of Customs and Indirect Taxes (ADII) said customs were able to seize considerable quantities of contraband goods (fabrics, clothing items, sports shoes, hardware, electronic equipment, food products, Covid-19 tests, etc…) with an estimated value of 152 million dirhams, against 242 MDH in 2020.
In addition, the National Customs Brigade (BND) carried out 30 crackdowns on various fraudulent business schemes, seizing contraband goods worth 31 MDH, in addition to the dismantling of a platform housing 10 clandestine workshops for the manufacture of prohibited plastic bags and the seizure of 100 tons of finished products and raw materials as well as machines for production.
Smuggled cigarettes inside the national market reached 1.91 percent in 2021, compared to 1.37 in 2020 due to an increase in cigarette prices in the country.
