Northeastern French city Strasbourg recently saw its application to be World Book Capital in 2024 accepted, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The capital of the Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine region said in a statement that it submitted its application on April 15 to the Paris-based UN organization.
Strasbourg recalled that the designated city “is committed to promoting books and reading in all its forms and for all ages of life.
This candidacy was in the electoral program of the mayor of the city, Jeanne Barseghian in the 2020 municipal elections.
UNESCO chooses its world book capital every summer based on criteria, including the quantity and quality of any other noteworthy projects promoting and fostering books and reading.
Currently, the Mexican city of Guadalajara still has the label for this year, and will transfer it to the capital of Ghana, Accra in 2023.
