Former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri announced this Monday, January 24, his “withdrawal” from political life, and his reluctance to run for the upcoming parliamentary elections in Lebanon.
Hariri stated that this decision is because he was convinced that “there is no room for any positive opportunity for Lebanon in light of Iranian influence, international confusion, and national division.”
This came after a series of financial and political setbacks the Middle Eastern country has been experiencing in the past few years.
The country is undergoing a severe political, economic and financial crisis that paralyzed activity and normal life.
Hariri made it clear that he would also not submit “any nominations from the Future Movement” that he leads “or in the name of the current government.”
The main Lebanese Sunni leader additionally called on his party not to present a candidate in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The fifty-year-old propelled onto the political scene after the assassination of his father Rafik Hariri in 2005, announced his decision in a brief speech in Beirut.
