Rabat’s Faculty of Educational Sciences has created a permanent free psychological support service for students, the first such service in a Moroccan public institution.
The support mechanism is a cell that was established by a group of psychology professors and attempts to help students navigate the deep psychological effects of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Through this initiative, supervised by a team of specialists forming the Psychological Support Cell, the faculty of Educational Sciences aims to promote mental health on campus, by providing free psychological support service to students who request it.
Those who wish to benefit from the service are required to fill out a form containing personal data and information, and send it to the cell. The students will then be scheduled for an appointment with a specialist for a session.
The faculty has confirmed that all information provided in the form and during the session will remain confidential and that the information and overall experience will contribute to scientific psychology studies undertaken by the cell.
The form includes information about the age of the applicant, his profession, the course of study, and the educational level, as well as personal information related to the place of residence, information about whether they have a history of physical or mental illness, and the difficulties that correspond to their condition.
The form also includes questions about whether the applicant has ever had access to mental health treatment, through councilors, psychologists, or psychiatrists, in addition to possible previous drug and treatment resulting from a previous diagnosis.
The Psychological Support Cell at the College of Education Sciences consists of four poles supervised by professors at the college, which are the Social Assistance and Mediation pole, the Difficulties and Psychological Disorders pole, the Learning Difficulties and Disorders pole, and the Life Skills pole.
Among the areas covered by the intervention of the college’s specialist team are features of anxiety, features of depression, psychological stress, learning difficulties, adjustment difficulties, and addiction.
