Three months after the Cumbre Vieja volcano began to spit out lava in La Palma, scientists on Saturday declared the volcanic eruption to be over.
The volcano had suddenly gone quiet on Dec. 13 but authorities waited until Christmas Day to declare the news.
“It’s not joy or satisfaction – how can we define what we feel? It’s an emotional relief. And hope. Because now, we can apply ourselves and focus completely on the reconstruction work,” said Pevolca director Julio Pérez, quoted by AP.
The archipelago’s government valued the loss of buildings and infrastructure at more than 900 million euros.
