The European Club Association continues its pressure on the International Federation (FIFA) and the Confederation of Africa (CAF), to postpone the upcoming African Cup final.
The final is scheduled to take place in Cameroon, starting January 9 to February 6, 2022.
European clubs called for postponing this sporting event, amid worries about players getting infected by the new Omicron variant.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said the new variant is a highly contagious virus of concern.
WHO said the Omicron variant has been detected in 89 countries and has a “substantial growth advantage” over the Delta variant, adding, “given current available data, it is likely that Omicron will outpace Delta where community transmission occurs.”
Recently, the Cameroonian government and the CAF said in a joint statement, “Despite the additional challenge of this pandemic, our CAN must now be played out. Its solemn opening ceremony is scheduled for January 9, 2022, at the Olembe Sports Complex.”
