Around 16 thousand Moroccan women are expected to participate in the seasonal strawberry harvest in the Spanish farms of Huelva.
According to Hespress sources from the Ministry of Economic Inclusion, government officials have held meetings with the Spanish party to facilitate the participation of Moroccan harvesters.
Preparations are currently underway to organize Moroccan workers’ first trip to Huelva on January 2022, the source said, adding that only women who participated in previous harvests will be sent to the strawberry farms next year.
Spanish authorities pledged to better the working conditions of women on the strawberry fields, following a sexual abuse scandal that tarnished the farms.
Morocco and Spain signed an agreement in 2001, granting women temporary visas to harvest fruit in Spain, promising much higher wages than they could earn at home in north Africa.
Each year, thousands of Moroccan women, mostly from low-income families, participate in the strawberry harvest, making Morocco one of the primary sources of workers for the Huelva fields.
However, Morocco’s border closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic has postponed the arrival of Moroccan workers to Huelva, leading to a delay in the harvest, Spanish media reported.
According to Europa Press news agency, the Moroccan government is currently working on facilitating workers’ trips, adding that they will begin immediately after the travel ban is lifted.
