Opponents of the Sudan military takeover vowed to escalate protests, after at least 15 civilians were reportedly killed on Wednesday, in the deadliest protests since last month’s military takeover.
Over three weeks following General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan derailed Sudan’s transition towards civilian rule, activists are facing increasingly dangerous circumstances as they protested.
The Wednesday deaths have raised Sudan’s death toll since the coup to at least 39.
Protestors said police were more aggressive than before during Wednesday’s protests, despite the military saying that peaceful protests are allowed.
Confrontations stretched to Thursday in the city of Bahri, which was hard-hit by Wednesday’s violence.
The United Nations condemned the repeated use of excessive force against peaceful demonstrators, calling on the de facto authorities and security forces to exercise restraint, refrain from further rights violations, and release all those detained since the coup, U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.
