Sudan’s military leader agreed with the United States on the need to accelerate the formation of a new government, after he ordered the release of four ministers of the ousted government, according to Sudan’s state-run agency.
General al-Burhan’s office released a statement on Thursday after a phone conversation with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in which he agreed on the need to speed up the formation of a government.
“The two parties agreed on the need to maintain the path of the democratic transition, the need to complete the structures of the transitional government and to speed up the formation of the government,” his office said.
US State Department spokesman Ned Price said that Blinken urged al-Burhan to release all political figures and “return to a dialogue that returns Prime Minister Hamdok to office and restores civilian-led governance in Sudan”.
The United Nations had been coordinating efforts to mitigate the country’s crisis, following a military coup on October 25.
A UN special envoy for Sudan previously said that a potential deal on a return to power-sharing is being outlined, including restoration of the ousted minister, Reuters reports.
Burhan said his actions were to avert a civil war, after politicians stoked hostilities toward the armed forces.
Protests broke out all over the country following the coup, with neighborhood resistance committees rejecting negotiations and demanding a military exit from politics.
