The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union on Wednesday decided to immediately suspend Sudan from all activities of the pan-African organization, following a closed-door meeting on the situation in the country.
In a statement issued by the PSC at the end of its 1041 st meeting, held on Tuesday on the Situation in Sudan, the Council decided to “suspend, with immediate effect, the participation of the Republic of Sudan in all activities of the AU until the effective re-establishment of the Transitional Authority, led by civilians.”
The PSC, which “strongly condemned the seizure of power by the Sudanese military on 25 October 2021 and the dissolution of the Transitional Government”, welcomed the release of the Prime Minister, and called for the immediate, unconditional and full release of all detainees, including Ministers and other civilian officials.
The Council “stresses the need for the military to respect human rights; in this regard, warns the military that they will be held accountable for the personal health, safety, and security of the detained officials,” the statement reads. On Monday, the African Union Commission’s Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, said he had learned with deep dismay of the serious developments in the current situation in Sudan, which included the arrest of Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdock and other civilian officials.
He called for the immediate resumption of civilian-military consultations within the framework of the political declaration and the constitutional decree.
The Chairperson of the Commission reaffirmed that the path of dialogue and consensus is the only relevant way to save the country and its democratic transition, calling for the release of all arrested political leaders and the necessary strict respect of human rights.
