Local authorities in Laayoune recently stopped over 100 migrants on their way to the Canary Islands, as attempted sea crossings in the Atlantic continue to increase, amid sturn security control of the shores.
70 irregular migrants, including 12 women and one infant, in the Atlantic Ocean, were stopped on Sunday, about 26 kilometers south of Laayoune.
A second operation on Wednesday ended with stopping 35 other migrants.
Earlier this month, a boat carrying 55 Moroccan migrants was stopped in the Agrifia community, 110 kilometers south of Boujdour city, while another 50 sub-Saharan migrants were stopped in the Foum El Oued commune in Laayoune, according to local authorities.
A total of 785 migrants, most of them from West African nations, perished this year in their attempt to cross the Atlantic and reach the Canary Islands of Spain, according to figures by the International Organization for Migration.
