President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced, on Monday, on her Twitter account that the European Union (EU) has exported more than 1 billion doses of anti-Covid vaccines or half of the doses produced in Europe over the past 10 months to over 150 countries.
The president of the European Commission said an important milestone was reached in delivering vaccines to the world, adding “We are the largest exporter of the anti-COVID-19 vaccines.”
“We have reached an important milestone in the delivery of COVID-19 vaccines to the world. Vaccines produced in the EU have been shipped to more than 150 countries on all continents – from Japan to Turkey, from the UK to New Zealand, from South Africa to Brazil,” Ursula said in a statement.
Around 87 million doses were delivered to low- and middle-income countries through COVAX, she highlighted.
“The EU will donate in the next months at least 500 million doses to the most vulnerable countries,” she added.
An hour after publishing her tweet, Ursula von der Leyen added a reply, saying “With Biden, we aim for a global vaccination rate of 70% by next year.”
“So on top of exports, the EU will donate at least 500 million doses, others need to step up too,” she said, adding, “Next week, I’ll work with Prime Minister Draghi and Biden to rally behind this goal.”
Recently in August, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced on her Twitter that 70% of adults in the European Union are fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the same post, Von der Leyen also shared a video, saying that’s “more than 250 million people that have received their COVID-19 jabs,” describing it as a “great achievement.”
