La Palma closed its airport on Thursday for the second time since September 19 following the sprouting of clouds of thick ash, resulting from the volcanic eruption, according to AFP.
“The airport’s operation is suspended for now,” an AENA spokeswoman told AFP, saying “some cleaning work needs to be done,” adding “but the closure may not last for so long.”
Starting Wednesday evening, the local airline Binter had canceled its flights due to the deterioration of security conditions related to the volcano eruption.
The Cumbre Vieja volcano began its fiery eruption on Sept. 19 and has destroyed more than 800 buildings. About 6,000 people have been evacuated from their homes on the island, which has a population of about 83,000 and is one of an archipelago making up of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic, according to Reuters.
The volcano resulted in the production of two lava rivers that led numerous residents to have their houses destroyed.
Recently, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Sunday that Spain will provide EUR206 million to help La Palma island recover from its volcanic eruptions, according to the same source.
The financial package is a part of the second stage of a plan approved last week, in which the first stage included a government aid of EUR10.5 million for the immediate assistance of those who had lost their homes.
