Heavy rains in Sudan caused strong floods that killed more than 80 people and damaged or destroyed thousands of homes, according to an official.
“A total of 84 people were killed and 67 others injured in 11 states across Sudan since the beginning of the rainy season,” said Abdel Jalil Abdelreheem, spokesman for Sudan’s National Council for Civil Defense, quoted by AFP.
The deaths were either caused by drowning, electrocution or house collapses, he added, stating that some 8,000 homes were destroyed and more than 27,000 damaged across Sudan.
Sudan is usually subject to torrential rains between June and October, and the country faces severe flooding every year, wrecking properties, infrastructure and crops.
The UN estimates that the floods and heavy rains have affected some 102,000 people since July.
A report by the UN last week said that nearly 50 villages have been submerged in southern Sudan, displacing 65,000 people including refugees whose camp was inundated.
Sudan was forced to declare a state of emergency last year, after floods affected at least 650,000 people, damaging or destroying more than 110,000 homes.
