Tunisia’s president Kais Saied plans to suspend the constitution and may amend the political system via referendum, one of his advisers told Reuters.
This marks the first clear indication of the president’s plans, more than six weeks after Saied seized governing powers, dismissed the premier and suspended parliament.
“This system cannot continue … changing the system means changing the constitution through a referendum, perhaps … the referendum requires logistical preparation,” said Walid Hajjem, an adviser to Saied.
Though Hajjem didn’t elaborate on what changes Saied was contemplating, he added that his plan was at the final stage and is expected to be formally unveiled soon, Reuters reports.
While Saied’s actions were widely criticized by opposition, branding it as a coup, the president maintains that his moves were necessary and were in line with the constitution, promising to respect Tunisian’s rights and vowing to not become a dictator.
However, a series of parliament members’ arrests after Saied lifted their immunity, as well as numerous travel bans, have alarmed some rights activists.
