Algerian authorities arrested on Sunday Tunisia’s former presidential candidate and media mogul Nabil Karoui after he entered Algeria illegally and secretly.

Media reports indicate that Karoui, head of the Heart of Tunisia party, was arrested with his brother Ghazi Karoui, a lawmaker.

Tunisia state TV said that Karoui secretly entered Algeria on Sunday and will appear in Algerian court on Monday.

Karoui previously spent more than six months in Tunisian custody on money laundering and tax evasion charges, he was released on June 15 while the court continues to investigate his case.

During the 2019 presidential election, Karoui beat most candidates to reach a run off for the presidency despite having spent most of his campaign behind bars. He eventually lost in a landslide to Kais Saied.
