Rafael Nadal will miss the US Open Grand Slam after announcing on Friday that he will be ending the season early because of an injury to his left foot.
The Spaniard wrote on his Twitter “I’ve been suffering a lot more than I should with my foot for a year and I need to take some time to resolve this problem or at least improve the situation.”
Following his defeat at Roland Garros against Novak Djokovic, Nadal skipped both Wimbledon and the Olympics before returning to the courts in Washington earlier this month, where he was defeated by South Africa’s Lloyd Harris.
The world number three is the latest in a series of big names to miss out on the US Open.
Former champion Roger Federer announced that he will be pulling out of the grand slam on Sunday, in addition to defending champion Dominic Thiem, who withdrew to recover from a wrist injury.
