Moroccan authorities intercepted 58,153 irregular migration attempts and dismantled 148 smuggling networks during the first eight months of 2026, according to Interior Ministry figures, as criminal groups increasingly used encrypted messaging platforms to organize crossings.
The ministry’s 2026 performance report said authorities also rescued and assisted 8,288 people between January and August, highlighting continued migration pressure along Morocco’s borders and maritime routes.
The figures reflect Morocco’s growing role as a country of origin, transit and destination, amid conflicts, economic instability and climate-related pressures across sub-Saharan Africa, the ministry said.
Smuggling networks turn to digital platforms
The ministry warned that trafficking networks were increasingly using social media, instant messaging applications and encrypted groups to recruit migrants and coordinate attempted crossings.
These methods allow organizers to conceal their identities and rapidly circulate information, complicating investigations and enforcement efforts.
Authorities also accused smuggling networks of exploiting misleading interpretations of Spanish court rulings concerning immediate returns.
Following incidents in northern Morocco in July 2026, criminal groups allegedly circulated claims that migrants could cross into Spanish territory without facing immediate deportation, encouraging attempted crossings by swimming, individually or in groups.
The ministry did not provide a separate breakdown of interceptions linked to these incidents.
Voluntary returns approach previous annual total
Morocco also reported 4,185 voluntary migrant returns during the first eight months of 2026, including 2,140 coordinated with the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
That compares with 4,372 voluntary returns throughout 2025, of which 2,808 involved IOM coordination.
The eight-month figure already represents approximately 96% of the previous year’s total, although the ministry did not provide a nationality breakdown.
For 2025, Moroccan authorities reported intercepting 73,740 irregular migration attempts, dismantling 300 criminal networks and rescuing 13,595 people attempting maritime crossings.
The ministry said its migration strategy combines border enforcement with humanitarian assistance and voluntary return programs implemented alongside diplomatic missions and the IOM.
The latest figures underscore the scale of enforcement operations, although the ministry’s report does not establish how many individuals were involved in multiple attempted crossings.
