Interior gives political parties November 15 deadline to propose changes to 2027 election laws

Morocco’s Interior Ministry has given political parties until November 15 to submit proposals for changes to the electoral laws governing the country’s 2027 local, regional and professional elections, as preparations begin for another round of voting following September’s parliamentary elections.

The deadline was announced during a meeting Thursday afternoon between the interior minister and leaders of several political parties, part of consultations launched under royal instructions to prepare the legal framework for next year’s elections.

The 2027 electoral cycle will cover communal, provincial and regional councils, professional chambers, employee representatives and the House of Councillors, the upper chamber of Parliament.

According to an Interior Ministry statement, Thursday’s meeting followed similar talks on Wednesday with political parties represented by parliamentary groups or caucuses, broadening consultations to include political formations outside those groups.

Discussions focused on possible legislative amendments, particularly whether to extend measures introduced ahead of the September 23, 2026, House of Representatives elections to the upcoming contests.

Those measures include provisions intended to strengthen electoral integrity and prevent misconduct during campaigns and voting.

Party representatives presented their preliminary observations on the electoral framework, while the ministry requested written proposals before November 15 to help shape draft amendments.

The proposed changes would subsequently enter the legislative process, with the government seeking to complete the legal preparations for the 2027 elections as early as possible.

The ministry described the discussions as positive and characterized by frank and responsible exchanges, saying participating parties expressed their willingness to contribute to preparations for the elections.

The consultations come weeks after Morocco’s September parliamentary elections produced a new political landscape and government, with the next electoral cycle set to determine the composition of local and regional institutions as well as the House of Councillors.
