Morocco is seeing a growing push for women in parliament, with some parties choosing women to lead their parliamentary groups, as the country prepares for a new government under Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri.
The Left Alliance, made up of the Federation of the Democratic Left (FGD) and the Unified Socialist Party (PSU), is set to appoint two women to lead its joint parliamentary group, a source from the alliance told Hespress English.
The two parties have agreed to rotate the presidency during the next legislative term.
FGD MP Nabila Jellal, who won a seat on the Casablanca-Settat regional list with 32,387 votes, is expected to lead the group during the first half of the term.
PSU MP Nabila Mounib, who won a seat in the Casablanca-Anfa constituency with 5,027 votes, will take over for the second half.
The final decision on who will lead the parliamentary group is expected to be announced tomorrow, the source added.
The Istiqlal Party has also chosen a woman to lead its parliamentary group, appointing Madiha Khayr to replace Allal Amraoui, who led the group during the 2021-2026 legislative term.
The decision was approved by the party’s executive committee on Thursday ahead of the opening of the new legislative term.
Khayr, who served on the finance and economic development committee during the previous legislative term, topped the polls in the Beni Mellal constituency in the September 23 legislative elections, securing 21,384 votes.
The Popular Movement is also reportedly considering appointing Rim Chabat to lead its parliamentary group, replacing Idriss Sentissi, who held the position during the 2021-2026 legislative term.
