Economic and trade ties between Morocco and Spain have deepened significantly in recent years, with bilateral trade surpassing €22 billion last year as the two neighboring countries become increasingly integrated through industrial supply chains.

The expansion has continued this year. Spanish exports to Morocco rose 3.5% in the first half of 2026 to more than €6.4 billion, while Spanish imports from Morocco increased 4.1% to more than €5.7 billion.

According to figures cited in a study by Spain’s Institute for Foreign Trade and Investment, Morocco imported more than $88 billion worth of goods from international markets last year, with Spain accounting for about 14% of those imports.

Morocco exported more than $50 billion in goods during the same period, with about 22% destined for the Spanish market.

Automotive sector illustrates integration

The automotive industry illustrates the depth of the economic relationship.

Morocco imported €1.038 billion worth of automotive components from Spain last year, according to data from the Spanish Association of Automotive Suppliers and Manufacturers.

That made Morocco the second-largest destination outside the European Union for Spain’s automotive component industry, behind the United Kingdom.

Morocco’s automotive industry generated about €15 billion in revenue from production and exports in 2025, according to a document from the Economic and Commercial Office of the Spanish Embassy in Rabat.

Spain accounted for about 20% of Morocco’s automotive exports, the document said.

The figures point to a relationship that extends beyond conventional trade into increasingly integrated production chains.

Morocco’s imports of Spanish automotive components represent only part of the country’s overall supply of components, as the kingdom has sought to diversify its suppliers, export markets and trading partners.

That diversification has strengthened Morocco’s ability to manage its relationships with individual partners while reducing dependence on any single market or supplier.

At the same time, Spain’s role as a major destination for Moroccan vehicles creates mutual dependence. A significant share of Morocco’s vehicle production is exported to Spain, giving Moroccan manufacturers an important position in the Spanish market, particularly in the lower- and mid-priced segments.

Spanish companies operating in Morocco’s automotive industry are also directly invested in the success of the country’s manufacturing sector, as any major decline in Moroccan production could affect companies that supply components to local manufacturers.

Economic ties withstand political tensions

The growing overlap of economic interests has helped sustain the broader partnership between Rabat and Madrid despite political tensions and unresolved issues, including the status of Ceuta and Melilla.

The relationship came under renewed scrutiny following the mass arrival of migrants in Ceuta in late July, prompting calls in some Spanish political and media circles to reconsider bilateral ties and impose economic measures against Morocco.

Such proposals face the reality of extensive economic interdependence between the two countries, with Spanish businesses relying heavily on access to the Moroccan market and Moroccan industries increasingly integrated into European supply chains.

The relationship has also expanded beyond trade to include investment, manufacturing, logistics and other sectors.

Spanish business leaders stress Morocco’s importance

Spanish business leaders have repeatedly highlighted the strategic importance of the Moroccan market.

Antonio Garamendi, president of the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations, said during an investment forum in Madrid in May 2023 that Morocco was Spain’s main gateway to Africa, while Spain served as Morocco’s direct platform to Europe and Latin America.

José Luis Bonet, president of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, said at the same forum that Morocco was the leading destination for Spanish exports and investment and stressed the commitment of Spanish companies operating in the kingdom.

He called for greater use of the countries’ economic complementarity through a shared agenda focused on digitalization, green development and inclusive growth, with particular attention to small and medium-sized businesses.

Several major Spanish companies have established operations in Morocco, including automotive parts manufacturers Gestamp and Antolin and textile group Inditex. Other Spanish companies active in the country include Romo, Recayron, Boluda Corporación Marítima and Expo Logistics.

Economic analyst Manuel Altoño Fernández-Villacanas of EAE Business School told Spanish news agency EFE that Morocco had based part of its industrial growth on integration with Europe through Spain.

A disruption in trade relations would carry costs for both sides, he said. Spain would lose an important market for its exporters, although its larger and more geographically diversified economy would give it greater capacity to absorb the impact.

For Morocco, however, the consequences could be more structural, particularly for industrial employment and the country’s reputation as a manufacturing platform serving the European market, he said.

The growing economic ties suggest that Morocco and Spain have moved beyond a conventional trading relationship toward a partnership based on interconnected industries and shared supply chains, making the stability of bilateral relations increasingly important to businesses on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar.
